Volkswagen officially unveiled its latest entry-level compact SUV, the Volkswagen Terra, at the Rio Carnival parade held in Rio de Janeiro on March 2, 2025. It is a great addition to the brand’s SUV range and makes it an affordable option in the lower four-segment meter range.

Design and Aesthetics

The Volkswagen Terra presents a modern and aggressive design inspired by the brand’s latest global SUVs such as the Tiguan and Taos. Key design features include:

  • Front Fascia: The Terra features a minimalist front grille, stylish LED headlights with unique DRL signature and a robust front bumper with honeycomb pattern.
  • Side Profile: The side profile features thick cladding, flat door panels and 17-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels.
  • Rear Design: The rear of the Terra is highlighted by wrap-around taillights connected by a black strip with silver accents, giving it a sporty, modern look.

Interior and Technology

The interior of the Volkswagen Terra is inspired by the brand’s ID electric model and has been designed with both functionality and cutting-edge technology in mind. Key features include:

  • Digital Instrument Cluster: A 10-inch fully digital instrument cluster for a modern driving experience.
  • Infotainment System: The VW Play Connect infotainment system offers seamless connectivity including Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
  • Other Features: The Terra also features inductive smartphone charging, ambient lighting and an Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) package.

Powertrain and Performance

Volkswagen is yet to officially announce the engine specifications of the Terra. The Terra is equipped with a 1.0-liter three-cylinder turbocharged engine and is expected to produce around 116 horsepower and 164 Nm of torque. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic.

The Volkswagen Terra is designed as an affordable SUV targeting customers in the R$ 100,000 – R$ 140,000 price range (roughly Rs. 14.8 lakhs to Rs. 20 lakhs) in Brazil. In India, the Terra is expected to be launched in 2026 with an expected price of Rs 9 lakhs to Rs 15 lakhs. It competes with models such as the Skoda Kok, Maruti Brezza, Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue and Kia Sonet.

The Terra is part of Volkswagen’s strategic plan to expand its presence in the compact SUV segment, particularly in emerging markets such as Brazil and India. The SUV will be produced at Volkswagen’s Taubate plant in Brazil and exported to over 20 countries including Mexico, South American markets and Africa.

The Volkswagen Terra SUV promises to combine modern design, advanced technology and affordability in the compact SUV segment. With aggressive styling, feature-rich interiors and competitive pricing, the Terra is set to make a significant impact on the global market.
